What is Nantetsu?
The Minami Aso Railway, affectionately known as Nantetsu, is a railway that connects the Tateno district of Minami Aso Village, the entrance to the majestic Mt. Aso caldera, to Takamori Town. In 1985, due to local enthusiasm, it was born as the third sector “Minami-Aso Railway” from the former National Railways Takamori Line. In addition to being used as a means of public transportation for local residents to commute to school, the route is located within the Mt. This railway is loved by passengers both domestically and internationally. Due to severe damage caused by the Kumamoto Earthquake that occurred in April 2016, all lines were suspended for a time, but on July 15 of the same year, all line operations were resumed, and service to JR Higo-Otsu Station began. Please enjoy the local railway, where you can feel the nature of Aso up close and spend a relaxing time.
